THE FARMER
The LAX Farm was founded by youth lacrosse coach Steve Alvarez who saw a need in the Central Texas lacrosse community for an introductory training program for boys. While there are many youth lacrosse leagues around the region, there are few lacrosse programs that focus solely on introductory training to help young boys prepare for their first season(s) as lacrosse players. Coach Alvarez is relocating and has since left The LAX Farm in the capable hands of fellow LAX Farmer Coach Geoff Smith.
Coach Geoff Smith has been a big supporter and coach for the program since its start in 2011 and will be carrying on the tradition of The LAX Farm. A few years ago, Coach Smith was looking for a lacrosse league in Cedar Park for his young son. He was unable to find any programs for elementary school aged kids who were new to the sport. There were a few programs that had Spring Leagues but he wasn’t sure they would show his son the basics and immerse him with a group of kids who were also new to the game. He was lucky enough to stumble upon the LAX Farm in 2011 and was very excited about this program. He jumped in with both feet and hasn’t looked back. Thanks to Steve, he has now been given the honor of sharing his knowledge of the sport and showing kids how exciting the fastest game on two feet can be.
Coach Smith has a long history with the sport of lacrosse. He was first introduced to the game in his junior year of high school when he played for St. Thomas High School in Houston. He qualified for the all star game that year as well as one of the first “Team Texas” elite travel teams. This team competed in the Golden Gate Invitational in San Francisco, California. He then attended college in San Marcos, TX and played for the Southwest Texas State (now Texas State University) Men’s Lacrosse team. He was voted most valuable attackman “MVA” twice and was Team Captain for all but his freshman year.
Coach Smith has continued his passion for lacrosse throughout the years by:
These experiences gave Coach Smith a chance to stay connected with the sport after college and begin a whole new chapter in his lacrosse world. Being a mentor to kids and teaching them the fundamentals of the game he loves has been a reward in itself. He believes that teaching respect for the game is essential. That includes respect for your teammates, your opponents, the officials and all the rules of play. He also believes that the values learned on the field should translate to life off the field as well.
Coach Smith resides in Cedar Park with his wife and three children. He has dedicated many years volunteering at his children’s school in the WATCH D.O.G.S (Dads of Great Students) program. He currently works full time with Austin’s largest investment broker/dealer. When he is not working, volunteering or coaching he likes to spend time with his family, he enjoys cooking, and string lacrosse sticks.
